Na Ilha do Porto Santo, o estudo da erosão hídrica do solo, elaborado para o Governo Regional (Lobo Ferreira J. e Veiga da Cunha, L., 1982), prova que o fenómeno é muito intenso e abrange praticamente toda a ilha, uma vez que as áreas com vegetação autóctone e reflorestadas são diminutas face à totalidade da área desta. A comprovar a intensidade do fenómeno verifica-se a colmatação rápida das pequenas albufeiras que têm sido criadas, continuando as zonas de praia a ser alimentadas pelos sedimentos carreados pelas principais linhas de água. Atendendo a todas estas atenuantes, o Governo Regional e a Câmara Municipal do Porto Santo, em colaboração com o Governo Central, decidiram construir mais de uma centena de barragens de correção torrencial, nos principais cursos de água existentes na Ilha de Porto Santo.
On the island of Porto Santo, the study of water erosion in the soil, prepared for the Regional Government (Lobo Ferreira J. and Veiga da Cunha, L., 1982), proves that the phenomenon is very intense and covers practically the entire island, a since the areas with autochthonous and reforested vegetation are small compared to the total area of this area. Proving the intensity of the phenomenon is the rapid clogging of the small reservoirs that have been created, with the beach areas continuing to be fed by the sediments carried by the main water lines. Given all these mitigating factors, the Regional Government and the City Council of Porto Santo, in collaboration with the Central Government, decided to build more than a hundred torrential correction dams, in the main existing water courses on the Island of Porto Santo.
Barragens ou diques de correção torrencial/ Torrential correction dams or dykes
As barragens de correção torrencial são obras de engenharia destinadas ao controle de ravinas e de cursos de água onde haja transporte e deposição de materiais erodidos do leito e das margens. A estabilidade da ravina é obtida pela redução da velocidade da água de modo a conseguir-se um equilíbrio entre a resistência do leito e a força erosiva do escoamento. De acordo com informações dos técnicos dos organismos oficiais, os numerosos açudes construídos em betão armado, alvenaria de pedra argamassada, pedra e arame e lajes de betão pré-fabricadas, apresentam altura de cerca de 5 a 6 m, existindo, no entanto, obras de menor e maior altura. Os diques ou barragens de correção torrencial construídos nos ribeiros, têm o objetivo de diminuir a velocidade do escoamento, minimizar a erosão hídrica do solo e evitar os eventuais desastres causados pelas cheias.
Torrential correction dams are engineering works designed to control ravines and watercourses where there is transport and deposition of eroded materials from the bed and banks. Ravine stability is obtained by reducing the water velocity in order to achieve a balance between the bed resistance and the erosive force of the flow. According to information provided by technicians from official bodies, the numerous dams built in reinforced concrete, mortar stone masonry, stone and wire and prefabricated concrete slabs, are around 5 to 6 m high, although there are works shorter and taller. The dykes or dams for torrential correction built on the streams, have the objective of reducing the flow velocity, minimizing the water erosion of the soil and avoiding the eventual disasters caused by the floods.

Por fim, e citando a CMPS, “A correção torrencial dos ribeiros, onde a erosão em ravina se expressava de forma significativa e em que os fenómenos erosivos se manifestavam com assaz gravidade, constituiu uma das grandes prioridades no âmbito das intervenções florestais desenvolvidas na ilha do Porto Santo. A construção de barragens em várias linhas de água, em harmonização com a arborização dos terrenos das bacias de receção dos ribeiros ou das suas margens, por forma a reverter tão intensa e generalizada delapidação do solo, evidencia tal esforço na proteção edáfica, que se expressa nas palavras do Engenheiro Silvicultor Campos Andrada: «Com estas obras, que ficam escondidas, por assim dizer enterradas nos talvegues dos ribeiros, se detêm milhares de toneladas de carrejos que de outro modo seriam arrastados para o mar»”.
Finally, and quoting the CMPS, “The torrential correction of the streams, where ravine erosion was expressed in a significant way and where erosion phenomena manifested themselves with seriousness, constituted one of the great priorities in the scope of the forestry interventions carried out on the island from Porto Santo. The construction of dams on several water lines, in harmony with the afforestation of the land in the reception basins of the streams or on their banks, in order to reverse such an intense and generalized degradation of the soil, demonstrates such an effort in edaphic protection, which is expressed in the words of Silviculturist Campos Andrada: «With these works, which are hidden, so to speak buried in the thalwegs of the streams, thousands of tons of carrejos are stopped that would otherwise be dragged to the sea»”.

Esta cache tem como objetivo dar a conhecer alguns diques de correção torrencial localizados no sítio da Ponta, mais precisamente na Ribeira da Ponta. A cache está situada numa ribeira adjacente, perto de um destes diques. As ribeiras em questão, estão secas ao longo de quase todo ano.
- Em dias de forte chuva, ou após esta, é desaconselhado a visita à cache.
- Após registar a cache, deixe tudo como estava. Leve material de escrita e vontade de conhecer um local novo.
- Depois de registar a cache, aproveite e explore um pouco mais estas barragens de correção torrencial e algumas das ravinas localizadas a norte e oeste da cache. Irá ser deixado um ponto de referência, caso pretenda ver as ravinas de uma boa perspetiva.
This cache aims to make known some torrential correction dykes located in the Ponta site, more precisely in Ribeira da Ponta. The cache is located on an adjacent stream, close to one of these dikes. The streams in question are dry throughout most of the year.
- On days of heavy rain, or after it, it is not recommended to visit the cache.
- After registering the cache, leave everything as it was. Take writing material and willingness to visit a new place.
- After registering the cache, enjoy and explore these torrential correction dams and some of the ravines located to the north and west of the cache. A landmark will be left in case you want to see the ravines from a good perspective.
