Kinshachi #5
Shachihoko(Kinshachi) is one of the decorations found on the roofs of castles, such as the main citadel. It is completely different from the "orca" of the sea, a sacred beast with a dragon (or tiger) head, a fish body, and a tail curved toward the sky. Legend has it that the orca would extinguish fire by emitting water from its mouth in the event of a fire. In the age of wooden architecture, when fire was a great enemy, the orca became the guardian deity of buildings along with the onigawara, or devil's tile.
It is no exaggeration to say that the most famous of all shachihoko is the "Kinshachi of Nagoya Castle. When Ieyasu Tokugawa built Nagoya Castle, he used a lot of gold to make his wealth known!
Construction of Nagoya Castle, which began in 1610, can be said to have completed the construction of early modern castles. Unfortunately, the first Nagoya Castle, designated a national treasure, was destroyed by fire during the war. The second generation castle, built of reinforced concrete, is currently closed for demolition, but the Kinshachi still adorns Nagoya in all its splendor.

金シャチ #5
しゃちほこは、城の天主閣などの屋根にある装飾のひとつです。海の「シャチ」とは全くの別物で、頭は龍（または虎）で胴が魚、空に向かってそり返る尾を持つのが特徴の「鯱」と書く神獣です。「火災が起きた際に口から水をだして火を消してくれる」という伝説から、火事が大敵の木造建築時代に、鬼瓦と並んで建物の守り神となりました。
しゃちほこの中で最も有名で、地元民からの敬愛も深い「名古屋城の金シャチ」。徳川家康が名古屋城築城の際、財力を知らしめるべく、これでもか！と金を使い天守に載せたのがはじまりです。これが「尾張名古屋は城でもつ」と言われる所以でもあります。
また、1615年の「一国一城令」以降、江戸幕府は新たに城を作ることを禁止に。1610年に築城を開始した名古屋城は、結果、近世城郭の完成形であったといえるでしょう。城として初めて国宝にも指定された初代名古屋城でしたが、戦火により無念の焼失。現在の鉄筋コンクリート造の2代目も、取り壊しに向けて現在閉鎖中となっています。数奇な運命を辿りつつも、懸命に、時として煌びやかさが失われようとも燦然と輝く金シャチは、今日も名古屋を優美に見守ってくれています。
