Selah Butte--The Trailhead
This is a five cache series leading to the top of Selah Butte. It is located in the Yakima River Canyon. This is a short but very steep hike. It is a great trainer for the off-season. The views from the top are well worth the effort. Our stats were 3.4 miles round trip with 1765 feet of elevation gain. We took about 3 1/2 hours with several stops and a lunch break at the top.
Recomended hiking times are early spring and late fall. As always, be aware of snakes in this area.
You will be looking for a small holiday tin with a pencil, a log and some trinkets a short distance up the trail.
Getting there:
If coming from Ellensburg, it's about 24 miles south through the Yakima River canyon. If coming from Selah, it's about 4 miles up the canyon. The easiest way on this one, is to type in "Selah Butte Trailhead" on Google Maps. You will be brought to a small pull-out on the east side of Canyon Road. Slow down as you approach as it's easy to miss. There is room for about five cars. Additional parking is available a short distance north up Canyon Road on the east side.
