Geocache Description:

Be careful at the slipway.

Plenty of parking at ground zero

A new sculpture called ‘The Shipbuilders of Port Glasgow”

Two 14-tonne figures of stainless steel of around 33 feet high pay homage to the shipbuilding past and industrial history of the town.

The original location for what has been locally dubbed as “The Skelpies” was intended to be the roundabout at the western entrance to Port Glasgow on Greenock Road. However, it was decided to move it to another more suitable location further east in Coronation Park, which was opened in 1937 to celebrate the coronation of King George VI. The area where the shipbuilders will reside is part of an extension of the park dating from the 1960s on reclaimed land near the site of the original East Harbour and wet dock, which was filled in.
