Much of the urban planning literature on sightlines focuses on visibility and tends to prefer straighter streets and paths because the sightlines are longer. Urban transportation approaches sightlines as a safety issue, such as ensuring pedestrians can see oncoming traffic and vice versa. In architecture and building design the concept of sightlines is predominantly used regarding things like auditoriums, stadiums, or particular historical landmarks. The City of London, for example, has 11 protected sightlines which new buildings are not allowed to impinge upon. Paris similarly preserves sightlines of the Eiffel Tower.
All of these views miss the point when it comes to sightlines and the everyday experience of walking around a city.
It's well known that some of the greatest sightlines are to be found in the winding, narrow, alleyways in dense historical pedestrianized cores of cities in Europe, which is the main reason tourists like to visit them. Equally attractive are the vibrant shopfronts and neon signs in narrow, winding streets in the densest parts of Tokyo, Bangkok and Seoul - streets with quite poor 'sightlines' according to traditional definitions of length of visibility.
Add to that list: Guangzhou, a city with some of the world's best sightlines as measured from the perspective of a pedestrian moving around the city, which is surely the one that matters.
