Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Wayne County Bicentennial Geocaching Trail. Wolcott was first settled around 1806 by Jonathan Melvin, who purchased 500 acres of land and built both a gristmill and a saw mill, utilizing Wolcott Falls for energy. Osgood Church, Obadiah Adams, and many others from Massachusetts and Connecticut settled with their families on nearby lots between 1807 and 1810. The town was separated from the Seneca County Town of Junius on March 6, 1810. Wolcott remained a part of Seneca County until April 11, 1823 when Wayne County was established, and was named in honor of Oliver Wolcott, who was a governor of Connecticut. The Town of Wolcott includes the villages of Wolcott and Red Creek and the hamlet of North Wolcott.

The cache contains a punch to use on your "passport." Once you get enough punches, you may trade in your passport of a prize. The punch should stay in the cache container. . . it is NOT swag. The punch is not swag, but the program has ended.

This cache brings you to the community sign in the middle of the village. Here you can see a listing of upcoming events in the area. There are memorial plaques for Sheila Martin and Elizabeth "Buffy" Havard near the sign. Nearby you can see the Red Creek Pedestrian Covered Bridge. There are historic markers for other sites like the log cabin built in 1813 by the first settler of Red Creek, Jacob Snyder. There is also a Veterans' Memorial in Downtown Red Creek, but I couldn't find a spot for a good sized container there! You are looking for a plastic container, hidden near but not on the community sign.
