The town of Butler consists of the hamlets of Butler Center, South Butler, West Butler and Westbury. Dr. Samuel Ringgold Ward was born a slave October 17, 1817. He became the minister at the Congregational Church in South Butler for two years. He was an African-American abolitionist and was involved in the passage of the Figitive Slave law. He also wrote the book "Autobiography of a Fugitive Negro: His Anti-Slavery Labours in the United States, Canada and England".

Reverend Antoinette Brown was the first woman ordained in the United States, and became the first female minister in 1851 at the Congregational Church in South Butler. She lectured nationwide on the subjects of women's rights and abolition and wrote and published many books on science and philosphy.
