GZから少し坂を上がった左手、妙光院は天台宗の寺院で、動物愛護の寺として知られています。境内にある馬頭観音菩薩像は高さ６㍍あり、日本最大の馬頭観音であると言われています。動物守護の本尊で、火炎を背負い走る馬の背に足を上げる姿は動物に災難が及ぶ時に救いに行く姿をうつしたものだそうです。 観音像の背後にある愛馬供養塔には名馬テンポイント、キシュウローレル、ハマノパレードなど多くの馬のタテガミが奉納されているそうです。毎年1 月 18日に初馬頭観音祭が行なわれ、愛馬やペットの健康を祈る参拝客で賑わうそうです。（kobe.lg.jpより抜粋）

A short walk up the hill from the GZ, on the left, is Myokoin Temple, a Tendai sect temple known for its animal welfare. The statue of Bato Kannon in the temple grounds stands 6 meters tall and is said to be the largest statue of Bato Kannon in Japan.
