Geocache Description:

I grew up near here and lived here until a few years ago. Lake Eucha is located in Delaware County just about 4 miles south of Jay. Elevation here is about 1120 feet. Delaware County was created in 1907 from Cherokee County. It is named for Delaware district of old Cherokee Nation. The town of Jay was named for Jay Washburn, a nephew of Stand Watie. Jay has been the county seat from about 1908 to current. Lake Eucha was made as Tulsa grew.

In the early part of the twentieth century Tulsa began to establish itself as the main urban center of the area. As it grew so did the demand for water. In 1922 work began on construction of a pileline to Spavinaw, located below "low water" about 5 miles. The Spavinaw Creek Dam created Spavinaw Lake. this became primary source of drinking water for Tulsa for the next 55 years. As Tulsa contined to grow the need for more water arose. In 1950 construction began on a second flowline to Spavinaw. In order to assure the water supply from the resevior a second lake, Lake Eucha, was created. The completion of the dam was in 1952. As Lake Eucha was created the need to move the town of Eucha. Located at N 36 23.519 W 94 52.971 is where New Eucha Store and Post Office is now located. The cemetery is now located at 36 21.705 W 94 52.844. These graves were moved from where the water is now standing.

Located at N 36 21.452 W 94 52.916 is the old Eucha School. It is now a covered shelter open for public use. Located at 36 21.202 W 94 52.598 are steps that lead down into the water. Right now the lake is about 4 to 5 feet below level and you can go about 10 steps down. Where you are standing on the roof of old buildings that are now under the lake. The one by the steps is an old jail. In 1980 the lake was nearly dry, this is the only time in my life I know of it being this low, and you were able to explore the buildings. I wrote my name on a wall in this place back then. There are some small caves in the area you can explore. You can find arrow heads in this area. The wildlife in this area include, deer, elk, eagle, fox, bob cats, squirls, chip munks, and others.

No hunting is allow near the lake. No swimming in the lake. One last point of interest is N 36 21.267 W 94 49.251 is the Lake Eucha State Park. This is the only state park that I know of that you can rent one table, one shelter or the entire park including the pool for one day or longer. Come visit my home town and the surrounding area. I still go back home about every weekend, as I still have family there.
