Epigaea repens L commonly known as the mayflower or trailing arbutus was officially adopted as Nova Scotia's provincial flower in 1901. The mayflower is a symbol of hope, fertility/new beginnings, and boundaries/protection. Its flowers emerge at the beginning of Spring, coming in full blossom towards the start of May, hence the name. The ship that brought the pilgrims to Plymouth was called the Mayflower which may have led to the naming of the flower in North America, although the flower known as the mayflower to the English was a different flower.
In Nova Scotia it is one of the very first wildflowers to be make its appearance in the spring. It creeps along the forest floor along the edge of trails or in exposed areas of woodlands. You can find them growing as early as April, often alongside the melting snow. M1D4M5D1P1M3P5 D3M2D4M5D7M14M12
