Geocache Description:

Fairbairn Pine Forest

The Fairbairn Pine Forest is the source of a range of spooky sightings and experiences within local folklore. Visiting at night has become somewhat of a dare among locals.

Since the 1970s, reports abound of mysterious noises and figures, but also things happening to cars – stalling, failing to start, radios flicking on and off, lights going out, and moving while in ‘park’ with the handbrake on. Through the 1970s to 1990s, many young drivers would head there as ‘rite of passage’ maiden voyage upon receiving their licence.

At 10pm one night in the year 2000, four friends pulled into a small clearing in the pine forest – leaving the car running with the lights on. After a couple of minutes – the engine stopped completely. They inspected the vehicle to identify what had happened, but were not able to identify any faults.

All of a sudden, the friends heard several girls screaming and crying from the woods. They were not able to identify the source of these sounds. Jumping back in the car, they desperately attempted to start the vehicle. It took 10 minutes for the car to begin working. The friends fleed in horror, never to return to Fairbairn Pine Forest.

This cache

The cache is not located at the provided coordinates – although it is not far away. To identify ground zero, you will need to complete The Spooky Stories of Struggletown Adventure Lab

Upon completing this Adventure Lab, you will be provided with an approximate set of co-ordinates. To identify the location of the cache, you will need to search the area surrounding these coordinates at night using torchlight to locate a horizontal row of reflective markers. While it may be possible to find this cache in daytime, you are likely to have more success in the dark. I have also placed a 20,000 year old curse on this cache, which will befall anyone who makes the find during daylight.

When logging, you are encouraged to share any spooky stories you have personally experienced in the Queanbeyan/ACT region.
