DeWitt Clinton was the sixth governor of New York. In addition to serving as governor, he was a US Senator and a three-time Mayor of NYC. During his time as governor, he was largely responsible for the construction of the Erie Canal. He was born in Little Britain, an area near current-day New Windsor (Orange County). He was the nephew of NY’s first governor, George Clinton.
