Between Kandanga and Imbil on the old Mary Valley Branch railway line is an old wooden rail bridge over Melawondi Creek near Melawondi sawmill. This historic bridge is quite impressive made of heavy logs.
The Mary Valley line was completed between Gympie and Brooloo in 1915, and closed to traffic in 1995. Mary Valley Heritage Railway (later the Mary Valley Rattler) commenced in 1998 running tours between Gympie and Imbil.
Difficulties with derailments and financial viability caused a closure around 2013. Later, funding by Gympie Regional Council allowed the Mary Valley Rattler to resume operations, but only between Gympie and Amamoor.
In recent years, demolition of the rail bridge at Kandanga means the Rattler is very unlikely to ever use this Melawondi Creek bridge again.
Melawondi sawmill is still in operation processing timber from the nearby forests.
Other railway historical sites nearby include Melawondi tunnel, and Imbil railway bridge, with C17 locomotive number 705 displayed at Imbil.
Between Imbil and Brooloo the old track is now a rail trail for horses, bicycles, and walkers.
