Geocache Description:

plastic peanut container

Located at the Tamarack Mine #5 shaft.  Tamarack Mining Co. took advantage of C&H’s failure to purchase mineral rights to the west of their operations, and bought up land to west of C&H.  Ran vertical shafts down to lode.  First shaft started in 1882 and took three years to dig 2270’ to lode.  #3, 4596’ vertical, hitting lode in 1894.

Fallen smokestacks can be seen to the north.  To the west are the ruins of the boiler and hoist houses.  The rock-walled ramp to the south was the railroad spur leading to the coal storage where the cars were dumped.

Note:  The mine is private property and posted no trespassing.  The cache is just inside the county right-away for Tamarack Waterworks Road.  Venturing farther west will bring you onto private property.
