Located at the Tamarack Mine #5 shaft. Tamarack Mining Co. took advantage of C&H’s failure to purchase mineral rights to the west of their operations, and bought up land to west of C&H. Ran vertical shafts down to lode. First shaft started in 1882 and took three years to dig 2270’ to lode. #3, 4596’ vertical, hitting lode in 1894.
Fallen smokestacks can be seen to the north. To the west are the ruins of the boiler and hoist houses. The rock-walled ramp to the south was the railroad spur leading to the coal storage where the cars were dumped.
Note: The mine is private property and posted no trespassing. The cache is just inside the county right-away for Tamarack Waterworks Road. Venturing farther west will bring you onto private property.
