Geocache Description:

Brackloon Wood is a hidden gem about 6km from Westport with a 4km circular walk that takes you around the wood. It is an ancient and little-known place, with 200-year old Atlantic oak trees fringed with lichen and ferns, rare white orchids, wood sorrel and bilberry. Brackloon wood is classified as a semi-natural Atlantic oak woodland.

The wood contains a lot of history, with moss and bramble-covered standing stones found here. There is also a prominent ringfort and even a stone circle. There are local stories of a Celtic past, of caves and treasures hidden in these woods.

However the main treasures that you are likely to encounter are the beautiful trees and wild flowers that populate the sunny glades. And some caches of course!

The cache is not in a Celtic cave, but rather a cave like passage behind a tree. Please ensure that the cache is replaced as it is found, with the stones stop the container from rolling out.
