Geocache Description:

Georges Lemay - 1925 - 2006

Georges Lemay began working in his mothers real estate business before the demands of his lifestyle turned him to crime.  After marrying Huguette Lemay, she disappeared under mysterious circumstances.  While Georges claimed she had been kidnapped, no evidence to support the claim was provided and Georges failed to appear for his official summons, leading to him being barred entry to the US.  Huguette was eventually found deceased with no conclusion to her suspicious death.  Lemay entered the criminal world in Montreal, became associated with the West End Gang and was tied to the gun runner Lucien Rivard, a relationship that would ultimately lead to his capture.  He was a figure in the 1957 burglary of the Bank of Nova Scotia in Montreal, stealing between $600,000 and $4,000,000 worth of bonds, jewellery and cash.  The theft left the police stymied until one of the gang was arrested on an unrelated charge and turned on the gang for leniency. Lemay was the only gang member to avoid capture.  However, when Lucien Rivard escaped from jail, the police attempted to use a new broadcast of Rivards image to have the public help in his apprehension.  The photo of Rivard, however, was replaced with the photo of Lemay at the time of broadcasting, and a US citizen identified Lemay.  After his arrest, he escaped, but was then re-arrested in Las Vegas before being deported to Montreal, where he would be sentenced to 14 years in prison.
