Welcome or Welcome Back to the Strange Fish Geocache series. In it I give homage to the weird and mostly unloved fish species of our waterways. I generally put "the cache near the catch" but in this case I made a necessary exception.
Lake Sturgeons are an ancient species. Things very much like them were swimming about in the time of the dinosaurs. They grow very large...up to 7 feet long and 240 pounds. The also live a long time....over a century in some cases. And they are very stubborn fish.
Recently while fishing below the nearby dam I could see a set of huge shark like fins/tail emerge from the water as a 5 foot long sturgeon tried repeatedly to get up the spillway. He or she really wanted to get upstream and spawn, something that has not been possible in Duncan creek for perhaps 150 years. I tried to avoid this monster....I was using light tackle. But sure enough I briefly had a second sturgeon on the line. Of course the line soon snapped and shortly thereafter a second gigantic fish could be seen approaching the impossible barrier. I imagine there was some discussion of "Your Place or Mine" but to no avail. Let's hope they eventually gave up and tried elsewhere.
As with all in the Strange Fish series, this is a custom cache. Please hunt inconspicuously and re-hide carefully, its a bit of a bother to redo this sort of thing! I am basing the terrain rating on doing it either from above (brief steep section) or below (thorns!).
