Geocache Description:

Albert Village Lake is located on the western border of the county, three miles west of Ashby-de-la-Zouch and only a mile from Swadlincote in South Derbyshire.

The lake at Albert Village was once a deep claypit when South Derbyshire fireclay was used in pipes and drains sent all over the world. The smoke from the kilns was so acidic it would rot curtains and the landscape was so pitted that one local man described it as 'it was like it had been blitzkrieged in the war'.

This former opencast mining site has dedicated parking (daylight hours only) located on Occupation Road, Albert Village. The site consists of a large central lake surrounded by gravelled walkways which are used widely by the general public. Due to the tarmac around the lake this walk is suitable for Buggies, cyclists and wheelchair users.
