Geocache Description:

The town of Matoaka was named after the daughter of Chief Powhatan, who is better know as Pocahontas. During the first half of the twentieth century when the coal fields of southern West Virginia were booming, so was the town of Matoaka.  The 1950 federal census listed Matoaka as having 1003 citizens; the current population is around 200.  The exodus of the population due to loss of coal jobs has resulted in many abandoned and dilapidated buildings in the once thriving downtown. Although the town of Matoaka is no longer incorporated it is till a town, and although the population is only a small fraction of the town at its height, it is by no means dead and community pride is alive and well.
