Pochi sanno che a Catania sono presenti ben due anfiteatri greci/romani! Abbiamo visto il primo a "Catania Vecchia", ora è il turno dell' Anfiteatro romano a pochi passi dal Duomo di Catania. Si trova tra  piazza San Francesco,Via Vittorio Emanuele, via Timeo e via Teatro greco. L'ingresso è da Via Vittorio Emanuele n° 260. 

Già Alcibiade nel 415 a.C raccontò di un teatro greco nella città, ma non era conosciuta la posizione. Le fasi più antiche testimoniano la presenza di un edificio teatrale costruito con grossi blocchi di pietra arenaria con lettere in greco in pianta rettangolare, un tipo di planimetria più diffusamente ellenistica. Tale struttura, già identificata negli anni 1884 e 1919 e attribuita a un teatro greco di V- VI secolo a.C, potrebbe essere propriamente il teatro in cui Alcibiade tenne il discorso ai Katanaioi, antico nome dei catanesi,per convincerli ad allearsi con Atene contro Syracusae. 

L’attuale struttura risale all’età romana e presenta diverse fasi costruttive, la prima risalente al I secolo d.C, quando una colonia romana ristrutturò il teatro in nome di Augusto.

In età medievale, l'anfiteatro cadde in declino e fu utilizzato come modesta abitazione e fu smantellato in gran parte per riutilizzare i materiali per nuove costruzioni.  Dagli anni '90 la struttura è in fase di ristrutturazione, per cui adesso è visitabile solo una parte dell'anfiteatro. A causa delle diverse eruzioni laviche e dei terremoti, nel tempo il livello del terreno è sceso e oggi la parte bassa della costruzione, soprattutto la zona dell’orchestra, è bagnata dalle acque dell’ Amenano, il fiume che scorre sotterraneo alla città, che impedisce l’uso del teatro per le rappresentazioni contemporanee.

Few people know that in Catania there are two Greek/Roman amphitheatres! We saw the first in "Catania Vecchia", now it’s the turn of the Roman Amphitheater a few steps from the Cathedral of Catania. It is located between Piazza San Francesco, Via Vittorio Emanuele, Via Timeo and Via Teatro Greco. The entrance is from Via Vittorio Emanuele no. 260. 

Already Alcibiades in 415 BC told of a Greek theatre in the city, but the location was not known.  The more ancient phases testify to the presence of a theatrical building built with big blocks of sandstone with letters in Greek in a rectangular plan, a type of plan more diffusely Hellenistic. This structure, already identified in the years 1884 and 1919 and attributed to a Greek theatre of V- VI century B.C., could be properly the theatre in which Alcibiades gave the speech to the Katanaioi, ancient name of Catania, to convince them to ally with Athens against Syracusae. 

The current structure dates back to Roman times and has several construction phases, the first dating back to the first century AD, when a Roman colony renovated the theatre in the name of Augustus.

In the Middle Ages, the amphitheatre fell into decline and was used as a modest dwelling and was dismantled largely to reuse materials for new buildings.  Since the 1990s the structure has been undergoing renovation, so only a part of the amphitheatre can be visited. Due to the different lava eruptions and earthquakes, over time the ground level has fallen and today the lower part of the building, especially the area of the orchestra, is bathed by the waters of 'Amenano, the river that flows underground to the city, which prevents the use of the theatre for contemporary performances.
