This was the last stand to defend Philadelphia in the Revolutionary War. The land for the fort was authorized for purchase by the Second Continental Congress on July 5, 1776, for use by the Pennsylvania Committee of Safety. It represents the first land purchase made by the United States. The 96 acres site was purchased for 600 pounds. The fort was built to protect a line of chevaux de frise obstacles that were placed in the river in 1775. The fort was a square earthwork of 15 acres with four corner bastions. It had a barracks, officers' quarters, and a bakehouse. The fort was never completed.
You can aslo watch planes take off and land from the Philadelphia airport. Parking is ample, and from Spring to Fall the bathrooms are usually accesible. If you geocache as a family, as we do, your kids will love this one because there is a nice big playground area. If you are in this area or passing by, slide on in for some fun or a picnic.
