American born, London based, artist, painter, founder of Tonalism, James Abbott McNeill Whistler entitled many of his paintings "arrangements", "harmonies", and "nocturnes", a parallel between painting and music. His most famous paintings, Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1, commonly known as Whistler's Mother was painted in 1871.
There is a painting by the artist, now held in the collection of Tate Britain, entitled Nocturne: Blue and Gold – Old Battersea Bridge, depicting the old Battersea Bridge. James Abbott McNeill Whistler's statue stands there, opposite 96 Cheyne Walk, where the artist lived, and not far from 74 Cheyne Walk where he died. Take a minute or two to compare his painting from the spot where the modern bridge is today.
