The following is a description of "Quantum of Solace, the complete James Bond Short Stories" from wikipedia.

"In the summer of 1958, the CBS television network commissioned Fleming to write episodes of a television show based on the James Bond character. This deal came about after the success of the "Casino Royale (1954 film)" television adaptation as an episode of the CBS television series Climax! Fleming agreed to the deal, and began to write outlines for the series; however, CBS later dropped the idea. In January and February of 1959 Fleming adapted four of the television plots into short stories and added a fifth story he had written in the summer of 1958. The stories were originally titled "The Rough with the Smooth" although this was changed to "For Your Eyes Only" for publication, which included the subtitle: "Five Secret Occasions in the Life of James Bond. After Fleming's death, a second collection featuring two short stories was released: "Octopussy and The Living Daylights." When the paperback edition of the book was published, "The Property of a Lady" and, by 2002, "007 in New York" had been added to the book by Penguin_Books" The current collection is entitled "Quantum of Solace."

These stories, in chronological order are as follows:

Risico

Bond is despatched by M to Italy to stop an heroin smuggling ring.  He is introduced to Kristatos, an agent working with the CIA who fingers Enrico Colombo as the center of the ring, but things are not all they seem.  Bond is abducted by Colombo, who reveals that it is actually Kristatos who is the heroin smuggler: the latter tried to use Bond to kill Colombo for him.  Bond eventually teams up with Colombo, a “good” bad guy, to destroy the ring and kill the actual ringleader, which is actually Kristatos.

Quantum of Solace

Bond is in Nassau at a dinner with the governor and a boring couple, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Miller.  Commenting both on how dull Rhoda Miller is, the governor relates the story of a colleague, Phillip Masters who married Rhoda Llewelyn, an airline stewardess.  The marriage ends with an affair by Rhoda and stories of inexplicable cruelty from a once mild manners Phillip.  The story finally comes full circle when Bond realizes that Rhoda Llewelyn Masters Miller is much more than he ever supposed.  No spy stories, killings or “adventure” but one of the most compelling tales in the series, to which Bond is a minor character.

The Hildebrand Rarity

On break between assignment in the Seychelles, Bond and friend Fidelio Barbey are hired to assist German American millionaire Milton Krest to capture a rare fish, the “Hildebrand Rarity.”  Bond assists using his snorkeling skills.  Milton Krest is an overbearing, uncouth, alcoholic who verbally insults everyone and who beats his English wife Elizabeth with a Stingray tail he calls “the corrector.”  After finding the fish, Krest’s drunken rage threatens Bond, until Bond finds him dead, but is unsure exactly how the death occurred.

From A View to a Kill

When a SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters Allied Power Europe, aka NATO) motorcycle dispatch rider is killed and his Top Secret documents stolen, M sends Bond to assist with the investigation. American Colonel Scriber, SHAPE commander is unhappy Bond is there, and presses him to finish his investigation quickly.  Bond discovers the “Invisible Man” who “everyone takes so much for granted so he just isn’t noticed” and uncovers a Russian spy cell, which he then takes down with UK personnel.

For Your Eyes Only

A retired British couple in Jamaica, the Havelocks, refuse to sell their plantation in Jamaica and are killed by agents of Von Hammerstein, a former Nazi officer who was in Cuba but is now hiding out in the US.  The Havelocks are old friends of M, who sends Bond on an unofficial mission to dispense justice by killing Hammerstein and his cronies.  Bond infiltrates via Canada, and makes his way to a bluff overlooking Echo Lake, Vermont, only to encounter the Havelock’s only child Judy, who is also there to kill Hammerstein.

Octopussy

Unique in that the entire story is told from the point of view of Major Dexter Smythe, with Bond playing a small but essential role.  Bond is sent to apprehend Smythe, who at the end of WWII found records of a Nazi gold stash.  Using his military credentials, Smythe had arrested a Austrian climbing guide who leads him to the gold, then killed the guide and smuggled it to the Caribbean.  All of this is flashback: Smythe is now an alcoholic widower who lives on the beach, exploring the coral reef and it’s inhabitants, including a “pet” he names Octopussy.  The guide's body had emerged from a glacier, and Bond recognized it as belonging to Hannes Oberhauser, who was a friend and father figure to a young orphaned Bond.  Bond chooses not to take Smythe into custody immediately, but leaves him to contemplate his options – suicide or a court marshall. While hunting for scorpion fish to feed Octopussy, Smythe suffers a sting and is dragged underwater by Octopussy as the poison sets in. Bond views the death as a suicide, but classifies it as an accidental drowning in order to spare Smythe's reputation.

Property of a Lady

The Secret Service learns that Maria Freudenstein, an employee known to be a double agent working for the Soviet Union, has just received a valuable item of jewelry crafted by Fabrege and is planning to auction it at Sotheby’s. Bond suspects that the resident director of the KGB in London will attend the auction and underbid for the item, to drive the price up to the value needed to pay Maria for her services. Bond attends the auction, spots the man, and leaves to make arrangements for his expulsion from London as persona non grata.

The Living Daylights

An unusually morose Bond is assigned sniper duty to help British agent 272 escape from East Berlin. Bond's duty is to safeguard his crossing into West Berlin by killing a Russian assassin codenamed "Trigger", who has been dispatched to kill him. Bond takes up a position on the western edge of the border, in a hotel overlooking the border of broken, brightly lit ground that 272 will have to cross. On each of three nights, he sees a female orchestra arrive for rehearsal and leave, taking particular notice of a beautiful blonde cellist. Once 272 starts to cross the border, Bond sees Trigger get in position to kill him and realizes that "trigger" is the cellist. He adjusts his aim at the last moment and shoots her weapon instead of killing her, allowing 272 to reach safety.

Afterward, Bond admits to his spotter that he did not try for a kill shot only because Trigger had been a woman. Bond muses that even though 272 is safe, the mission will be considered a failure because he did not kill Trigger, and he hopes that M will strip him of his 00 number for it.

007 in New York

A short but amusing tale, in which Bond is sent to Manhattan, New York to meet with an MI6 agent and inform her that her boyfriend is actually a KGB agent (see ending of the movie Quantum of Solace).  Bond plans his entire evening in Manhattan, including his favorite recipe for scrambled eggs, which restaurants he will visit, and an intended meeting with Solange, a call girl he has met before, after his quick meeting.  Unfortunately, a small hitch derails all his plans and he spends the day rearranging the meeting which is a long, intense and frustrating affair.  It is unique in that has an extremely amusing ending.
