Tanashi Shrine has its roots in Jodono Daigongen, which was built in the Kamakura period. It was located about 1km north from the current location and moved in 1646 when the Ome Kaido was opened to carry the limestone from Ome. Tanashi means the absence of rice paddies because people around here was suffered from the scarcity of water until the Tanashi Waterway was opened in 1696.
田無神社のルーツは鎌倉時代に創建された尉殿大権現（じょうどのだいごんげん）で、当時は約1キロ北にある田無第2中の場所にありましたが、江戸城建造に必要な石灰を青梅から運ぶために青梅街道が開通し、田無宿ができたことをきっかけに1646年に現在の場所に移されました。田無という地名の由来は、1696年に田無用水が開通するまで水が乏しく田んぼがなかったからという説が有力です。
