I grew up on a cranberry farm in Vilas County and some of this written information was 'new to me'. The improvided rakes which is talked about are now prize possessions of every cranberry farmer. The rakes now reside as antiques inside of homes.
During harvest time, as children, we would jump off the school bus around 4pm. Right on cue the harvesters would shut down the cranberry sorting rooms and they would go home. For us, mom would head to the house and begin supper. We'd eat and then mom and all of the kids would head back down to the sorting rooms and clean. We'd scrub the equipment and sweep the floors. Not one cranberry was left behind. Dad would head to the nearby bar. The cleaning took hours and we'd come out of the barn well after dark, have a snack and off to bed.
Each harvest time, we'd sweep/clean and dream of our reward at the end. One year I got a wind up alarm clock. Another year I got a winter coat yet other years we didn't get anything. It was a simple life then. A black and white TV, no computers, a community telephone line and plenty of pine trees to climb. Some evenings we'd climb the telephone poles and grab the glass insulators at the top. The neighbor boys would head out and remove the road signs. You know the ones that say Stop, Curve, Speed Limit. Yup they'd unscrew those signs and take them home and decorate their bedroom walls with them. On Saturday's we'd go to the dump in the back of the 'ol pick up and watch the bears eat. That was our entertainment.
