About this cache location:
On the cement wall of the northern underpass, you will see a mural dedicated to Freehold resident Corporal Philip A. Reynolds. At 150 feet long and 15 feet high, the nine-panel mural tells Corporal Reynolds’ heroic story.
Philip A. Reynolds was a resident of Freehold, who enlisted into the Marines shortly after graduating Freehold High School. On November 29, 1950, Reynolds had been serving as a machine gunner, facing an enemy force that outnumbered and surrounded his unit. Reynolds exposed himself to direct attack in attempt to hold back the enemy. When his gun jammed, he was mortally wounded. Witnesses say that his bravery empowered the men to defend themselves and survive the situation. For unknown reason, the Reynold’s body was not returned to his family until 1955. It was at this time Corporal Reynolds was unceremoniously laid to rest nearby in Saint Rose of Lima cemetery.
In 2010, Lucille Dill (Philip’s older sister), Dan Savino and the Marine Corps League petitioned to have the Rt 9 Bridge over Throckmorton St renamed. In 2021, Marines Ed Temple, Jesse Schild and Willie Ponder completed the mural.
Corporal Philip A. Reynolds was posthumously awarded a Silver Star and a Purple Heart.
