Orchestra Iowa recently celebrated its centennial season. It is one of the oldest professional orchestras west of the Mississippi River that has been in continual existence. The orchestra, intially known as the Cedar Rapids Symphony Orchestra and comprised of volunteers, had its first concert on April 23, 1923 at Sinclair Auditorium on the Coe College campus. Concerts took place in Veterans Memorial Coliseum through the Great Depression and World War II. In the 1950s the orchestra starting paying its musicians and director. The orchestra moved its performances to the Paramount Theatre in 1980 where concerts are held today. In 2004 the administrative office moved into the building next door, its current location at 119 Third Ave SE. During the aftermath of the devasting 2008 flood, the orchestra began performing in other venues around the state of Iowa while the Paramount Theatre recovered from the damage. During this time, the orchestra changed its name to Orchestra Iowa to reflect its mobility. Orchestra Iowa continues to perform in places other than the Paramount Theatre, such as in the Iowa City/Coralville area.
The Sound Wave was dedicated on June 3, 2023. The building side is a playable musical instrument that the public is invited to play at any time. The street side of the Sound Wave honors those musicians who are playing, or have played with the orchestra twenty years or more.
