Puu Pia Trail in Manoa Valley. Pu'u means Hill in Hawaiian language, all I can find for Pia is that it means 'Arrowroot?' I didn't know we had arrowroot plants in Hawaii! I thought it came in a bottle at the spices isle at the grocery store! :P
As you drive into Manoa valley, on East Manoa or Manoa Road, have you ever noticed a small hill towards the back right side of the valley? Palolo valley has one too (don't know if Palolo one has a trail)!
This is a fairly easy hike. Dark in places due to the forest canopy, but a 40 minute hike (.75 miles according to the sign) to the top. YMMV.
You can get general trail directions and description at the state web site. The State of Hawaii trail web page (visit link)
Fairly close to Manoa Falls hike, and quite a different view at the end. You can see pretty much the entire Manoa valley, the ridges of St. Louis Heights on the left (Waa'hila ridge), Tantalus Heights (Pauoa Flats) on the right, Lyon Arboretum in the back (the white rooftop next to the clearing), and a good portion of Waikiki & Ala Moana highrises. I like this little trail. There's a number of nice clearings, for resting, picnicing, but make sure to go to the end, where the two electrical poles are, as that's where the best view is (of a lot of things :).
There is a fork at the early part of the trail, near the picnic table shelter, and if you take the right fork, Waa'hila trail, it will take you up to the park at the top of St. Louis Heights. Be warned, this is one arduous hike uphill! I was sweating like mad, and i think it took us, like, 3 hours to do. :P
The cache is a clear plastic bin with screw on red lid and handle (dried octopus snack from costco!). I strung it around a small shrub to keep it from falling away. Left a computer brand drink coaster and a freebie credit card calculator. Sorry about the cheapo homemade log. You can also get descriptions from the virtual cache (search for GCAACA in the geocaching.com web site) listing as it is the same vicinity. There is also a benchmark right nearby if you do those too (i dont, and i stumbled onto it). In fact, you can do all three at the same time. All we need now is a webcam cache up here! :) Aloha!
