Geocache Description:

"Vardeto Steps" is an impressive path which connects Vradeto and Kapesovo.

The steps used to be the only way to reach the village Vradeto. An access road was paved only in 1970 and connected the village with the other villages in the vicinity. The route is actually a calderimi road [an ancient donkey road] which was built on the side of the canyon and has about 1000 steps that curve up/down. This road is used to connect the village of Varadto to the village of Kapsovo and from there to other villages. The route is not suitable for those who suffer from a medical problem that limits walking, but if you do not have such a problem, the route is wonderful and provides a great view of the area and the northern part of the relatively small Mezaria gorge, which is parallel to the Wikos canyon. The length of the route is about 50 minutes to an hour. Those starting the route from the village of Varadto [recommended] will find at the end of the steps 2 ancient stone bridges known in the Zagoria region.

The cache is located about 1 km down the road (when starting from the top, see WP). Off the path, and away from the muggles.

Somewhere in the middle of the road, you will find an old wooden sign with the words Look Down engraved on it. Take a peek, just carefully. From this point, you can see the winding route best. It is important to remember that the route is not a circular route.

The vegetation on the way: Those who walk the above-mentioned routes will discover a wide variety of flowers [depending on the seasons], some of which are unique to the region. An amazing fact is that on the way of about 5 km [on the routes] about 350 varieties of plants were discovered and at least a third of them are unique to Greece and/or the Balkan countries. Some of them are used as medicinal plants and some are defined as protected plants.

Enjoy!
