Geocache Description:

This cache has been placed in honour of the Matilda's magnificent run in the 2023 Football World Cup.

At the time of release, the Matildas were due to shortly play their R16 match against Denmark. Having made the quarter finals of the World Cup on three previous occasions, the Australian Women's team have high hopes of going further this time. Their 4-0 trouncing of Canada in their final group stage match on Monday 31st July has set the stage for a huge groundswell of optimism and national support.

Carn the 'Tildas!

I've seen many local cache hides placed around AFL community clubs in Geelong. This is me making sure that Geelong caching knows about "real" football. Haha.

At the given location, you will find a pleasant park area, surrounded by  a good handful of magnificant community institutions. The Grovedale CFA have been known to run practice exercises in this park. The local scout group is one of the strongest in the Geelong Region. There is also a nice little BMX track, a community orchard, a small modern playground, and a community hall.

Did I mention the mighty Barwon SC? One of the best football clubs in the Bellarine and south of the Barwon.

This is a very well-loved little pocket of Grovedale.

To solve these questions, you shouldn't need to resort to Google!

  • A = How many different youth sections are there in scouting? There is one for each main colour on the Scout Victoria logo. (ie, Cub Scouts, Scouts, and …?)
  • B = How many light towers does Barwon SC have on its main fields?
  • C = These main fields also have some rather solid looking blue-stone sideline bench shelters. How many?
  • D = How many sets of AFL goal posts can you find in this recreation reserve?
  • E = How many cricket practice nets can you find?
  • FG = How many circle holes are there in the purple wall on the playground?
  • HJ = How many plastic discs are there on the vertical climbing ropes?
  • KLMN = In what year was Barwon SC established?
  • P = There are two park benches near WP1 with identical plaques on them, acknowledging a tree-planting program. Have a seat and convert the two main words from the plaque into a single digit number using the popular geocaching method (explained below).

Stay seated to work out the GZ coordinates. You will not have far to walk. It is in a nice young grove and should not be too taxing to discover.

S 38 HN.P(B/E)M
E 144 FG.(J-K)(A-C)(D+D)

How to translate words into single-digit numbers using a method often encountered in geocaching

  1. Decode each letter into a number. Usually, this is as simple as a=1, b=2, c=3, etc...
  2. Sum all of the numbers.
  3. If the sum total is greater than 9, then sum the total's individual digits.
  4. Keep doing this until you reach a sum total that is less than 10 (a single-digit figure).

    Example: GEOCACHE => 7+5+15+3+1+3+8+5 => 47 => 11 => 2
