Geocache Description:

There are many interesting rock formations at High Cliff, some of which leave us wondering whether they were made by man or nature. One of the first times we camped here, the site was near a rock wall that was both very long (distance), and very short (height). As the kids settled down in the tent for the night, and I sat on the picnic table top, lightly strumming an acoustic guitar to the fading embers, I heard the rustling sound of night bandits! I grabbed a headlamp and shined it into the nearby trees, catching the reflective eyes of 3 well-fed raccoons. It wasn't embarrassment at being caught, but more a look of contempt in their glowing eyes. What an inconvenience this human was in the midst of their scavenging schemes. Slowly, they changed course, and waddled their thick, furry haunches to the rock wall. Like a troupe on a tightrope, the three raccoons walked single file atop the long, short wall, vanishing into the night.

This cache is a nice, easy find, just off the Red Bird Trail near the family campground. Pre-loaded with tiny treasures for the little ones.

And if anyone has more information about these mini rock walls found throughout the park, I'd love to hear about it! We found a fairly modern looking ceramic insulator near one, the kind that is often used in electric fence construction with livestock. Where and when is that from? From what I've read, this park opened in 1957, before which it had been a limestone quarry for 60 years. Perhaps there was a period of agriculture before that? And would that have been the native Siouan people? Supposedly they were nomadic, so maybe not? So much history and mystery to uncover in this natural wonder!

This cache has been placed with the permission of Wisconsin DNR staff at High Cliff. Enjoy!
