Ilhéu da Cal
O Ilhéu da Cal situa-se a 400 m a sudoeste da ilha do Porto Santo. O espaço marítimo que separa o ilhéu da ilha do Porto Santo tem o nome de Boqueirão de Baixo. É o maior ilhéu do Porto Santo, medindo pouco mais de 1 km⊃2;. Todo o seu território é marcado por falésias e escarpas recortadas, tendo o ponto mais alto a 178m de altitude. É cortado pelo paralelo 33 N.
Ilhéu da Cal is located 400 m southwest of the island of Porto Santo. The maritime space that separates the islet from the island of Porto Santo is called Boqueirão de Baixo. It is the largest islet in Porto Santo, measuring just over 1 km⊃2;. Its entire territory is marked by cliffs and jagged escarpments, with the highest point at an altitude of 178m. It is cut by parallel 33 N.
História/ History
O Ilhéu da Cal alberga um importante testemunho da história e cultura do Porto Santo, sobretudo pelas minas de extração de cal, de onde advém o seu nome. A extração deste precioso minério ficou marcada por diversos acidentes, entre os quais, o mais trágico de todos, vitimou dezasseis homens, que ficaram soterrados no interior de uma mina em consequência de um desabamento de rochas. Atualmente, estas minas encontram-se desativadas. Esta extração de cal deixou vestígios, como é exemplo as grutas subterrâneas que, com a devida autorização e acompanhamento especializado, podem ser visitadas.
A longa relação entre este ilhéu e os habitantes do Porto Santo, deu aso à denominação de diversos locais neste ilhéu, devido à necessidade de destinguir os diferentes locais nesta ilha “adjacente”. A geotoponímia está muito presente no Ilhéu da Cal.
The Ilhéu da Cal is home to an important testimony of the history and culture of Porto Santo, especially for the lime extraction mines, from which its name comes. The extraction of this precious ore was marked by several accidents, among which, the most tragic of all, killed sixteen men, who were buried inside a mine because of a rockfall. Currently, these mines are deactivated. This lime extraction left traces, such as the underground caves which, with proper authorization and specialized monitoring, can be visited.
The long relationship between this islet and the inhabitants of Porto Santo gave rise to the name of several places on this islet, due to the need to distinguish the different places on this “adjacent” island. Geotoponymy is very present in Ilhéu da Cal.
