Geocache Description:

This cache is a letterbox hybrid and it is not at the posted coordinates!  There are letterbox clues below that will lead you to the cache, but if you prefer, you may use the final coordinates to find it.  These are also posted below on the cache page.

Note that this park has seasonal access.  The signs at the front of the park state that it is open from April through October.  Please do not attempt to search for this cache when the park gates are closed and locked.

Dawn to dusk caching only!

This cache was originally hidden for the That's Not Fair . . . or Is It ?!?? Part Deux event on September 2, 2023.

It seems like large caches are getting pretty rare these days, and finding a letterbox cache that also has a large container is even more unusual.  Many of the Dublin Art boxes are set up as letterboxes with large containers, and I also happened to find a large letterbox cache in Allegany State Park back in May, but outside of those caches, I can't remember when I last saw a large letterbox container.

When I discovered a good hiding spot for a letterbox cache in this park, I was all set to put a regular size container in place, but after considering how the trails were overgrown and did not seem to have been maintained in a good while, I decided that it might just be safe enough to hide a large cache in the park.  I believe that hunters may roam these woods in the wintertime, so I'm hoping that this cache will not be discovered and stolen.

The container is a 7.65 gallon plastic storage bin (now 4.75 gallon) which is so big that I decided to put more than one letterbox stamp in it.  If you are a letterboxer with a stamp book, bring it along and get three for one.  Please note that the stamps and inkpads are not trade items and need to remain in the cache.

Letterbox Clues

Begin your hunt at the trailhead at the posted coordinates.  Head west for about 100 feet until you reach a fork in the trail.  Take the trail to the left and follow it for roughly 550 feet.  Be careful with your footing if the grass is high, as it may be difficult to see uneven ground.  There may also be thorn bushes that reach out onto the trail, so you'll need to watch out for your face as well as your feet.  The trail will wind back and forth a bit, but eventually you will reach another fork.

Once again take the trail to the left and this time you will need to go about 200 feet.  Again you may need to watch your footing and be careful of thorns.  Soon you will reach a wooden bench and another fork in the trail.  If you've twisted an ankle along the way or taken a thorn in the face, you may want to sit down and recuperate for a while.

You will be taking the fork that heads roughly northwest, but quickly turns almost due west.  If you're facing the bench, you will need to go to the right.  If you sat down to rest, stand straight up and head to your left.  If you somehow manage to go in the wrong direction, the trail will dead-end in tall weeds after about 100 feet and you will have to turn around anyway.

After walking about 350 feet from the bench, through some twists and turns, you will reach a second bench on the left side of the trail.  You are now very close to the hiding spot, so don't waste any time resting!  Continue along the trail a short distance as it curves to the left.  You will only need to go about 100 feet from the bench and then look to the left side of the trail for two tall but slender trees that are about 8 to 10 feet apart.

After you pass the second of the two trees, look to the right side of the trail for a small double-tree with a fairly large mossy rock at its base.  Even if the rock is not there, you should still be able to identify the double-tree since it is about eight feet past the second of the two tall, slender trees.  The cache is now about 50 feet away.

Find the best entry point near the double-tree and head straight into the woods on the right side of the trail, staying as perpendicular to the trail as possible.  The woods are fairly dense at this location, so you will not be able to walk straight in, but take the best route you can find and try to keep sight of the double-tree so you can line yourself up with it.

Once you have gone in about 50 to 55 feet, line yourself up with the small double-tree as best as you can, keeping it directly between you and the trail, and you should find yourself standing very close to two or three logs.  Nearby is a very large piece of a cut up tree.  The letterbox container should be hidden right next to it, covered with a few pieces of wood.

Good Luck!
