In cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the Friends of Twin Lakes Recreation Area, the Kinzua Area Cachers and Penn Soil RC&D announced that they will co-host a geomeet for geocachers to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Allegheny National Forest’s establishment on Sunday, September 24, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at a picnic pavilion in the Twin Lakes Recreation Area. This is an almost all-day geomeet that allows ample time for geocachers to attend the geomeet and sign the event log to get a smiley in addition to allowing plenty of free time to go after the 40-50 geocaches on the Twin Lakes Trails and Forest Roads in the vicinity of the Twin Lakes Recreation Area. There will also be plenty of other geocaching related activities such as exchanging or discovering travel bugs, picking up a printed ANF Centennial GeoTrail passport document from Penn Soil RC&D or redeeming your passport if you have already completed the requirements to earn your ANF Trackable Tag. If you are a novice or beginner who wants to learn more about the activity called geocaching or to start working on the Allegheny National Forest Centennial GeoTrail, We will also have samples of different types of geocache containers and present an overview of how to get started on the hobby where you become the search engine.
We have had several calls inquiring whether there was any alternative to having to visit one of the three Allegheny National Forest offices on a weekday to redeem your ANF Centennial GeoTrail Passport. Since a lot of geocachers tend to cache on weekends, this event offers geocachers an opportuntity to redeem their passport and pick up the ANF Souvenir Trackable token at this event. We thank the ANF staff for allowing us to offer this special opportunity today!
Come help celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Allegheny National Forest. Admission is free for this family-friendly event. Planned festivities that are within walking distance of the geomeet pavilion will also include live music, guest speakers, kids' activities, commemorative giveaways, interpretive hikes, an expo of organizations, history displays, food trucks, and beverage vendors.
Constructed on July 17, 1937, by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the Twin Lakes Recreation Area provides a beautiful setting to immerse yourself in nature and history. Come and commemorate the recovery of the land, one hundred years of sustainable growth, and the collaborative conservation work that promises a resilient forest for generations to come. Make it a day of geocaching with some of your favorite cachers and meeting some new geocachers while you find a few geocaches.
