The roots of golf in Australia trace back to 1839, with primary evidence found in Alexander Brodie Spark's diary entries. Spark's documentation highlights golf being played at Grose Farm, now part of urban Sydney.
Spark and his companions established the New South Wales Golf Club in June 1839. However, this club had a short existence and is not directly linked to the present New South Wales Golf Club.
In South Australia the records date to 1869 when an Adelaide Golf Club, formed by then-Governor Sir James Fergusson played as a social group on land adjacent to the old Victoria Park racecourse.
Today golf consistantly ranks in the top 10 of the most particapted sports in Australia.
