Get to Know Your State Forest - Forgotten Foundations
The First State Tree Nursery was located here at Clark State Forest. Seedlings were grown in the area that is now the Ballfield, then they were lifted from the soil, packed in one of the seedling storage sheds with moss from the compost pit to keep the roots moist, and shipped across the state to help with reforestation efforts. Is this cache hidden in the remains of a storage shed? Or perhaps in the remnants of the compost pit? Only history knows the answer to those questions! If you are wanting to plant trees, Indiana’s Division of Forestry is doing the same things today it was doing 120 years ago, growing trees!
