In passato, molti molti anni fa, il luogo in cui ti trovi era circondato da due rami del fiume Po che delimitavano un territorio sicuro dove i Romani avevano scelto di vivere.
Alcuni scavi iniziati già dagli anni '80 hanno portato alla luce resti di edifici d'epoca romana e tardo antica, oggi i resti sono interrati, ma gli studi continuano ancora. All'interno della chiesa infatti si trova una raccolta di reperti trovati durante gli scavi, i quali vengono ancora studiati. Se volete visitarla il custode Marco sarà ben lieto da farvi da cicerone, basta seguire il consiglio del cartello posto all'ingresso. Vi avviso che il custode ha dei cani, uno dei quali per la sua mole potrebbe sembrare aggressivo, ma in realtà è molto buono e dolce.
Cenni storici
In età tardo romana il sito di S. Michele era occupato da un abitato fortificato a forma ovoidale, le fonti collocano la prima chiesa sopra i resti della necropoli tardo antica all'interno della fortificazione, costruzione effettuata sotto il re longobardo Ariperto II e durante l'episcopato di Emiliano di Vercelli, attestato nel 707 d.C. Il sito presenta quindi il caso eccezionale di conservazione di un centro religioso longobardo sovrapposto ad una precedente area fortificata.
Fra il X e il XI l'area è occupata da un insediamento con varie attività produttive e botteghe e viene eretta una nuova e più ampia chiesa. La chiesa romanica di San Michele fu modificata con ampliamento del coro nel XII sec. e le pareti dell'abside vennero affrescate. Venne in seguito costruito un campanile (distrutto da un ciclone nel 1950) e l'abitazione del custode.
Nel corso del XIII sec. la chiesa venne abbandonata per via del trasferimento della sede plebana in S. Maria, l'attuale chiesa di S. Francesco nel vicino borgo di Trino fondato nel 1215. La chiesa di S. Michele mantenne però la sua funzione funeraria.

In the Roman age the site of S. Michele was occupied by an fortified village, the first church was buiding over the ruine of a ancient necropolis inside the fortification. The construction was built under the Lombard king Aripert II attested in 707 AD.
Between the 10th and 11th centuries the area was occupied by a village with various production activities and shops and a new and larger church was erected. The Romanesque church of San Michele was modified with the enlargement of the choir in the 12th century and the walls of the apse were frescoed. A bell tower was later built (destroyed by a cyclone in 1950) and the keeper's house.
During the 13th century the church was abandoned for a new church, in the nearby village of Trino founded in 1215.
