LIFEDUNAS Traditional Cache

As dunas da praia do Porto Santo são uma estrutura geológica de areia costeira, única no arquipélago da Madeira, que se desenvolveram principalmente pela ação dos ventos e que albergam uma biodiversidade própria que é crucial para o regular serviço ecossistémico da ilha. Constituem também barreiras naturais dinâmicas que impedem o avanço do mar sobre o território, protegendo-o dos processos de erosão.

Devido à ação antropogénica, a integridade da estrutura das dunas ao longo da costa sul do Porto Santo encontra-se vulnerável, pelo que, necessita de soluções sustentáveis a longo prazo para restaurá-la o mais próximo possível do seu estado original, melhorando a resiliência e adaptação da ilha às alterações climáticas e seus eventos climáticos extremos, previstos tanto pela Estratégia de Adaptação às Alterações Climáticas da Região Autónoma da Madeira – Estratégia CLIMA-Madeira quanto pela Estratégia da União Europeia sobre adaptação às alterações climáticas.

O principal objetivo deste projeto é a restauração de uma área do cordão dunar, fortemente afetada pela ação antropogénica, minorando desta forma os efeitos da subida do nível médio do mar, nomeadamente a tendência erosiva verificada no Porto Santo, nas últimas décadas, através de medidas que adicionem recursos sedimentares ao sistema costeiro, permitindo-lhe uma maior resiliência.

Para além do beneficiário coordenador, a Secretaria Regional do Ambiente, Recursos Naturais e Alterações Climáticas (SRAAC), através da Direção Regional do Ambiente e Alterações Climáticas (DRAAC), este projeto conta com 5 parceiros, nomeadamente o Gabinete do Vice-Presidente no Porto Santo (GVPPS), a Câmara Municipal do Porto Santo (CMPS), o Instituto das Florestas e Conservação da Natureza (IFCN, IP-RAM), a Secretaria Regional de Agricultura e Desenvolvimento Rural (SRA) e a Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (FCUL). Possui ainda uma comissão científica composta por especialistas regionais e nacionais de várias instituições, bem como especialistas da União Europeia e de outras Regiões Ultraperiféricas, ficando desta forma assegurada uma parceria sólida e multidisciplinar

      The Porto Santo beach dunes are a geological structure of coastal sand, unique in the Madeira archipelago, which were developed mainly by the action of the winds and which harbor their own biodiversity that is crucial for the regular ecosystem service of the island. They also constitute dynamic natural barriers that prevent the advance of the sea over the territory, protecting it from erosion processes.

Due to anthropogenic action, the integrity of the dune structure along the south coast of Porto Santo is vulnerable, therefore, it needs long-term sustainable solutions to restore it as close as possible to its original state, improving resilience and adaptation of the island to climate change and its extreme weather events, foreseen both by the Adaptation to Climate Change Strategy of the Autonomous Region of Madeira – CLIMA-Madeira Strategy and by the European Union Strategy on adaptation to climate change.

The main objective of this project is the restoration of an area of the dune cord, strongly affected by anthropogenic action, thus mitigating the effects of the rise in mean sea level, namely the erosive tendency verified in Porto Santo, in the last decades, through measures that add sedimentary resources to the coastal system, allowing it greater resilience.

In addition to the coordinating beneficiary, the Regional Secretariat for the Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change (SRAAC), through the Regional Directorate for the Environment and Climate Change (DRAAC), this project has 5 partners, namely the Office of the Vice-President in Porto Santo (GVPPS), the Municipality of Porto Santo (CMPS), the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN, IP-RAM), the Regional Secretariat for Agriculture and Rural Development (SRA) and the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (FCUL). It also has a scientific committee composed of regional and national specialists from various institutions, as well as specialists from the European Union and other Outermost Regions, thus ensuring a solid and multidisciplinary partnership.

Esta cache pretende elucidar a necessidade de proteger as dunas e dar a conhecer o projeto que está em desenvolvimento (LifeDunas) numa área bastante frágil na Praia do Porto Santo.

A cache encontra-se num local com vista privilegiada sobre a área de intervenção na Praia do Porto Santo. 

      This cache intends to elucidate the need to protect the dunes and make known the project that is being developed (LifeDunas) in a very fragile area in Praia do Porto Santo.

The cache is located in a place with a privileged view over the area of intervention in Praia do Porto Santo.
