Aletta Jacobs (1854-1929) is onder de Groningers een bekend historisch figuur. Dit gebouw is naar haar vernoemd gelijk toen het gebouwd werd. Ze staat bekend als de eerste Nederlandse vrouw die de opleiding tot arts heeft afgerond aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (RUG), wat haar de eerste vrouwelijke arts maakte met een universitaire opleiding. Tevens was Aletta tijdens haar leven erg actief in het feminisme. Ze staat bekend om haar bijdrages aan de strijd voor gelijke kansen en gelijke rechten voor vrouwen. Kiesrecht voor vrouwen was bijvoorbeeld 1 van deze rechten.
Aan de overkant van het water zie je de Aletta Jacobshal. De Aletta Jacobshal is sinds 2009 in gebruik genomen door de RUG. Het gebouw bevatte origineel 5 ruimtes, 4 tentamenhallen en 1 grote collegezaal. De uitbreiding die in 2020 werd afgerond voegde hier nog 3 hallen aan toe. In totaal zijn er nu 3 collegezalen met 195, 450 en 600 plekken. De zaal met 600 plekken is een van de grootste collegezalen in Nederland. Daarnaast zijn er nog 5 tentamenhallen met in totaal 1250 plekken en 600 digitale plaatsen.
Één van de kenmerken van het gebouw is de oranje kleur van centrale hoge foyer. Dit is het eerste wat opvalt als je het gebouw in loopt. In 2016 is er een petitie geweest met als doel deze oranje kleur te veranderen. De oranje kleur zit er nu nog steeds. Verder bevindt zich onder het gebouw een fietsenstalling met ruimte voor 1550 fietsen. Tot slot liggen er op het dak ongeveer 500 zonnepalen. Als je de tijd hebt raad ik je aan een klein rondje te lopen, tegenover de hoofdingang zijn nog wat bankjes waar je bij goed weer vaak studenten ziet lunchen 😊 Nu zal ik stoppen, veel plezier met zoeken!
