Geocache Description:

Wat Si Mung Muang is located in the district of Doi Saket, about twenty kilometers northeast of Chiang Mai. From the enclosure door the tone is set, with two Singh, mythological lions acting as protectors. These two are majestic and proud.

Tai lue temple

Wat Si Mung Muang is located in Ban Luang Nuea a Tai lue Village. They once had their own kingdom, the Kingdom of Sip Song Panna This territory extended into Yunnan, southern China. Following successive migrations in the last two centuries, several tai lü temples are to be discovered in the provinces of Nan and Phayao. Wat Si Mung Muang is the most significant in Chiang Mai province.

Modern architecture

The chronicle mentioned on the informative panel attributes the foundation of this monastery to Phaya Sam Fang Kaen, a Lanna monarch in the 15th century. The main buildings are however much more recent. The central Viharn, for example, is an illustration of the convergence of Lanna architecture and taï lü ornaments. Its refinement is subtle. The grand hall is bounded by two rows of columns and hand-embroidered drooping flags. Five Buddhas are placed on the altar, the main one being white. Dominating his congeners with a head, he displays a humble but concentrated face.
