This cache is the reincarnation of Paths Between Buildings which was located a kilometre or so to the north but went missing.
Many of the larger roads in Zhujiang Xincheng leave much to be desired in the way car traffic is prioritized over trips on foot. Some of the highrises make partial amends through pedestrian-only pathways and alleys winding between the buildings sometimes interspersed with small plazas. This cache - a nano - is near one such public access pathway and plaza.
We perceive the city at street level, where our vision has evolved over millennia to focus on immediate surroundings. Predators seldom approach from above. When we walk, our gaze rarely extends above the first floor of buildings. Thus, our experience is defined by what happens at lower levels. Many high-rises buildings unfortunately neglect the critical street-level experience, prioritizing the grand structure above. This is true of many buildings in Zhujiang Xincheng.
However retrofits are emerging, with new pedestrian links and plazas winding between the buildings, and sometimes even through ground floor lobbies. The building south of the cache has a pubicly accessible convenience store and cafe installed into what would previously have been a cavernous but dead lobby. Rather than dodging parked cars or walking around sterile facades, pedestrians in these areas have some shortcuts and surprises in store. Each plaza and link is managed separately, creating a diverse and engaging urban landscape.
It's taken 10 years, but this retrofitting trend is now gradually turning Zhujiang Xincheng into a more appealing area.
