남산(南山)은 서울특별시 중구와 용산구에 걸쳐 있는 산이다. 높이는 해발 270.85m로서 서울의 중심부에 위치하여 서울의 랜드마크가 되기도 한다. 정상에는 N서울타워가 있으며, 그 부근까지는 케이블카가 설치되어 있고 남산 1·2·3호 터널이 뚫려 있다.
역사 및 명칭
남산은 조선시대 초 태조가 1394년 풍수지리에 의해 도읍지를 개성에서 서울로 옮겨온 뒤에 남쪽에 있는 산이므로 ‘남산’으로 지칭되었으며, 풍수지리상으로 안산(案山)에 해당한다. 또 나라의 평안을 비는 제사를 지내기 위하여 산신령을 모시는 신당을 세웠는데, 이 신당은 목멱대왕 산신을 모시고 있어 '목멱신사'라고 불렸으며, 이때부터 이 산을 목멱산(木覓山)으로 불렀다. 목멱은 앞산의 이두식 표기로 목멱산은 산이 두 번 들어가는 옳지 못한 표현이다.[1]
조선 도읍 초기부터 신성한 영산으로 여겨져 온 남산은 종남산(終南山)·인경산(仁慶山)·열경산(列慶山)·마뫼 등으로도 불렸다.[2][3][4] 북악산, 낙산, 인왕산과 더불어 한양의 내륙분지를 형성하던 곳이고, 조선 도읍 초기에는 이들 산군들의 능선을 따라 성곽이 쌓였다. 정상에는 조선 중기까지 봄과 가을에 초제(醮祭)를 지내던 국사당(國祀堂)과, 통신제도의 하나인 봉수제(烽燧制)의 종점인 봉수대(烽燧臺)가 있었다.[5] 또한 성벽 일부가 남아 당시의 흔적을 보여 준다.[2]
1908년 일본제국은 남산 일대를 무상 증여받아 옛 남산식물원에서 남산 3호터널에 이르는 공간에 공원을 조성하였다. 1910년에는 시민공원으로 개장하였으며, 1916년에는 남산 전체를 공원화하는 계획을 수립하였다. 1918년에는 사대문 안 어디서든 보일 수 있도록 남산에 조선신궁을 세웠다.[6] 조선신궁에서는 아마테라스 오미카미와 메이지 천황을 제신으로 삼아 숭배하게 했다. 지금의 힐튼호텔 맞은편 어린이 놀이터에서 안중근의사기념관과 남산식물원 터를 아우르는 43만 제곱미터의 넓은 면적이다.[7]
탑골공원에 이어 남산도 시민공원으로 개발되어 한양공원이라 불렀다. 당시 공원 묘지로 세웠던 '漢陽公園(한양공원)'이라는 고종 친필의 석비가 지금도 구 통일원 청사 옆에 보존되어 있다.
Namsan (Korean: 남산; lit. South Mountain), officially Namsan Mountain or Mount Namsan[citation needed], is a 270-meter (890 ft)-high peak in Jung-gu, Seoul, South Korea. Although known as Mongmyeoksan, or 목멱산 / 木覓山 in the past, it is now commonly referred to as Mt. Namsan. It offers some hiking, picnic areas and views of downtown Seoul's skyline. The N Seoul Tower is located on top of Mt. Namsan.
The mountain and its surrounding area is Namsan Park, a public park maintained by the city government, which has panoramic views of Seoul. It is also the location of a smoke signal station called Mongmyeoksan Beacon Tower (목멱산 봉수대; Mongmyeoksan Bongsudae), which was part of an emergency communication system during much of Seoul's history until 1985. From 1925 to 1945 the Shinto shrine known as Chōsen Jingū was situated on Mt. Namsan.[1]
In 2011, a survey was conducted by Seoul Development Institute, which included 800 residents and 103 urban planners and architects. It ranked Mt. Namsan as the most scenic location in Seoul by 62.8 percent of residents and 70.9 percent of the experts surveyed.[2]
The park and the fountain were used as the filming location for Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS)'s drama Lovers in Paris.[3]
Namsan is mentioned in the second verse of South Korea's National Anthem.
