Geocache Description:

AA #9: The Old Vicarage

The cache, a small, camo-taped plastic pot, is hidden across the road from this notable historic building at the eastern end of the village.

This fine old residence in an extensive shady garden with mature trees, is in the C of E parish of Weston All Saints in the diocese of Leeds. It is not known which priest/s lived here and when it ceased being used as a vicarage.

It is a Grade II listed building with the 14 July 1987 listing reading:

Former vicarage, now private house. C17, with early - mid C19 alterations. Coursed squared gritstone, rubble, ashlar [large square-cut stones] to ground floor, squared gritstone blocks to second floor; graduated stone slate roof. 3 storeys, 4 bays. Quoins [corner masonry stone blocks]. Board door bay 3 with quoined jambs [doorway sides] and shallow triangular- headed lintel. Flanking 2-storey bays with 4-light [individual window] recessed and chamfered mullion-and-transom windows.

The remaining windows are all of 3 lights, with a transom [horizontal strengthening beam] to window above entrance. Continuous drip mould over ground-floor windows and to bay-window parapets. Stone gutter brackets, hipped roof [without vertical ends (gables)] with 2 corniced ridge stacks. Left return: the roof-line of a 2-storey house is visible in the masonry, indicating that the C17 building was rebuilt 1 storey higher. Interior not inspected at resurvey.
