Geocache Description:

This cache is located just off one of the side trails on beautiful Snake Mountain in Addison VT.

We'd suggest you READ THE ENTIRE DESCRIPTION before setting out to find the cache.

Snake Mountain is a popular hiking site in Addison Vermont. The main trail up the mountain is easy to follow and fairly wide although the terrain is somewhat rocky. We noted several different types of wildlife along the way including rabbits and a very large owl. Also a friendly collie who likes to follow hikers up and down the trial!

The hardest part of this cache is the hike itself. It's a challenging but enjoyable 1 hour hike in each direction. You may want to allocate a half day so you can enjoy a picnic at the top. We'd recommend you bring water and a snack for the hike as you'll burn a few calories on the way up. Our GPS noted a change of 900 feet in elevation from bottom to top. Because of the length of the trail and the incline, it's probably not suited for children under 8-9 (a guess).

To get to Snake Mountain from Vergennes, take route 22A south to Addison 4 corners. Continue on 22A for exactly 3 miles. Turn left onto Wilmarth road and go to the end, a "T" intersection with Mountain road. You will be facing the trail entrance at that point (see picture). To park, turn left and go 500 feet. The parking coordinates are N44 02.955 W073 17.524.

We highly suggest you follow the main trail all the way to the top. There is a concrete foundation at the top which provides a nice place for a picnic and offers the wonderful views (see the pictures for the foundation plateau and scenery). The plateau is located at N44 03.690 W073 16.886, get there by following the trail. From parking to plateau, it's about 1.46 miles along the path.

Once you get to the plateau, THEN set your coordinates for the cache site. If you go in this order, you'll find the cache easily. If not, you'll be bushwacking for some time.

The cache is an ammo can located just off one of the secondary trails. We've loaded it with goodies so the can is fairly full to start. If you'd like to take and leave stuff, please plan on leaving something fairly small rather than filling the can. We've included a ziploc for the log, and a couple for the goodies. Please keep the items in their respective bags to keep them from damage from weather and condensation. Initial contents include 2 clip-on snakes (appropriate!), a rabbit's foot, 3-pack mini erasers, 3 pencil sharpeners, 2 American flag pins, mini-biner key chain, "spring guy" pin, porcupine animal, metal whistle, squirt gun, 2 mini spring clamps, flashlight, and a new Bud hat. We've also included "Sammy the San Diego Shark", a travel bug who'd like to travel to the San Diego zoo. Help him along if you can.

We've included some photos which show the main trail entrance, a typical view along the trail, a difficult section of the trail, and a couple of shots from the top of the mountain at the plateau. Note we took the pictures on Thanksgiving so there was a 2 inch layer of snow.

This is our second cache. We hope you enjoy the hike.
