There was a cache based on this church set in the past set by HKMHill, and has long since been archived - Church Micro 6870...Chastleton.
The church in Chastleton was originally built around 1100AD; the only remains of the original Norman church are a door in the north wall, the arches and maybe the font. The church was enlarged in 1320, with the addition of the chancel, widening of the north wall and addition of the south aisle.
The bell tower was constructed in 1689, with three bells, until a fourth was added in 1726, increased to five bells in 1731, with the sixth bell, the tenor bringing the ring to current six. The bells were refurbished in 1900, and in 1993 the bells were rehung and retuned after £40000 was raised to enable them to be hung a new steel frame.
The church of St Mary the Virgin, or St Mary’s forms part of the Team benefice of Chipping Norton and holds regular services. It also forms part of the Chastleton House National Trust attraction with local groups using the church to run a teashop for visitors, and to raise funds. It is a grade II* listed building.
On the north walls there are wall paintings dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, which formerly covered the whole wall, and depicts The Ten Commandments and the Lord’s Prayer. The east window depicts the four Evangelists, whilst the south window is Jesus as a child.
The alter is a recent addition having been built in 1993.
In order to uncover the coordinates you need to enter the church yard to collect information from the headstones; firstly on the left as you head towards the church door:
Let:
The Year Florence Newman was born: ABDE
Age of Tom Delaney at his death: C2
The years of Sarah Helena Reeve: 19G8-199F
Geoffery Tom Fairbanks: 24th July 1J8I Age 7H
Then the location is: N51ºAB.CDE W001ºFG.HIJ
Once you have worked out these coordinates you will realise they are not quite right.
A little more searching in the church yard will lead you to a headstone, and a man who would have the necessary skills to complete this task. Please do not take his name in vain, but rather to use it to add to your knowledge, in a fashion used amongst geocachers.
