Geocache Description:

Introduction:

Welcome to the EarthCache "Jewels in Hermanus" This EarthCache will take you on a geological journey to discover fascinating aspects of quartzite bedding and cross bedding in the beautiful town of Hermanus, South Africa. You will gain insights into the geological history of the region and learn how these rock formations provide valuable information about Earth's past.

Geological Background:

Hermanus is located along the southern coast of South Africa and offers a unique opportunity to explore geological features related to the Cape Fold Belt, a significant mountain range formed during the late Paleozoic Era. Quartzite, a metamorphic rock derived from sandstone, is a prevalent rock type in this region.

Quartzite Bedding:

Quartzite bedding refers to the layering or stratification found in quartzite rocks. As you explore Hermanus, pay attention to the distinct layers in the exposed rock faces. These layers often display different shades and patterns, indicating variations in mineral composition and sedimentary history.

Cross Bedding:

Cross bedding is a fascinating geological phenomenon that provides insight into ancient depositional environments. Look for outcrops or exposures of quartzite rocks that exhibit inclined layers within the main horizontal bedding. These inclined layers, known as cross beds, are typically formed by the migration of sand dunes or ripples in a prehistoric desert or river setting.

Logging Requirements:

To log this EarthCache as "found," please complete the following tasks:

  1. When was the Cape Fold Belt mountain range formed?
  2. Observe the quartzite bedding and cross bedding at GZ, by looking south out at the rock formations. (a) Describe the characteristics of the quartzite bedding you observe (e.g., layer thickness, color variations). (b) Note the orientation and angle of any cross bedding you encounter.
  3. Look around you at GZ, find a Quartz line within a large rock. (a) touch and feel the quartz, what is the difference in texture, look and feel (inc color) from the surrounding rock.
  4. Share a photo of yourself or your GPS device at one of the quartzite outcrops.

Important Notes:

  • Please be respectful of the natural environment. Do not damage or collect any geological samples.
  • Be cautious while exploring and obey local regulations.
  • Share your findings and experiences with the geocaching community.
