Geocache Description:

About Village Sign Caches

This cache belongs to the Village Sign Series, a series of caches based on ornate signs that depict the heritage, history and culture of the villages that put them up (generally on the village green!).

The signs can be made of different materials from fibreglass to wood, from forged steel to stone. They can depict anything from local industry to historical events. The tradition probably started in Norfolk or Suffolk and has now spread across most of the country so we thought we would base a series on them!

More information and statistics can be found at the Village Signs Website

Taynton is listed in the 1086 Domesday Book as being a manor of 6 hides, previously held by the Saxon lord Alwin and since the Norman Conquest by William Goizenboded. The manor then passed to the Du Boys family and then, by marriage, to the Ferrers family (later Viscount Hereford). In 1601, the Crown reclaimed the manor, following the execution of Sir Christopher Blount. The manor was later sold to a succession of owners, including Sir Robert Parkhurst (d.1636) and Thomas Pury MP (d.1693).

The village is famous for its show of daffodils in the Spring hence their appearance on the village sign.

The Cache

This is a short, simple multi cache. There is nothing at the posted coordinates. Parking is available by the post box (waypointed). It is a micro so you will need to bring a pen.

In order to find the cache, you need to find the brass plaque on the sign itself and answer the following questions:

How many words on the first line? = A

How many letters in the word on the second line? =B

What is the first digit of the date on the last line? = C

How many lines are there in total? = D

How many words on the third line? = E

The cache, a 35mm pot, can be found at:

N 51° 53.(C+D)(A+E)(C*E) W 2° 23.(D+E)(B-E)(A+E-C)

Checksum - A+B+C+D+E=21

If anybody would like to expand the Village Sign Series, please do. I would ask that you request a number for your cache first at www.villagesignseries.co.uk so we can keep track of the Village Sign numbers and names to avoid duplication.
