Quem percorre Ponte de Lima nem sempre se apercebe que à história que chegou até hoje, esconde-se uma outra que revela as muitas faces que a vila já ostentou. As fotografias antigas, mais do que os desenhos ou representações do burgo medieval, ajudam a compreender a transformação de cada rua até à sua disposição atual.
A primeira fotografia de que há registo, tirada a partir da Casa da Além da Ponte, data de 1858. É a fotografia que encabeça esta página. Nela ainda se vê o campanário que encimava a Torre de São Paulo; e a Torre Velha, embora já incompleta, junto à Igreja de Santo António, entre as pontes romana e medieval. A partir do século XVIII a expansão urbana trouxe grandes alterações aos traços herdados do antigo burgo medieval. A muralha e as suas torres foram demolidas para desafrontar a vila e empregar a pedra em objetos de utilidade pública. Daí em diante, e desde a famosa fotografia de 1858, abriram-se ruas, transformaram-se avenidas, remodelaram-se praças, adaptou-se o que havia e construiu-se o que faltava. Como último marco urbanístico destaca-se a inauguração da Ponte de Nossa Senhora da Guia, vulgo “Ponte Nova”, em 1980, que veio marcar a paisagem e tirar o trânsito da Ponte Velha.
Entre 1858 e 1980 são muitas as fotografias que nos contam a transformação urbanística da vila, as mudanças do quotidiano e a vivência de momentos históricos. Há também um pequeno filme de 1963, com cerca de 20 minutos, realizado por Reinaldo Varela, filho de pais limianos, e exibido na RTP – Rádio e Televisão de Portugal, numa série intitulada “Terras de Portugal”, que retrata a vida da comunidade limiana, não só na vila, mas também no concelho, em meados do século XX. |
Those who visit Ponte de Lima do not always realize that the history that has survived to this day hides another that reveals the many faces that the town has already had. Old photographs, more than drawings or representations of the medieval town, help to understand the transformation of each street to its current layout.
The first known photograph, taken from Casa da Além da Ponte [“After the Bridge’ House”], dates from 1858. It is the photograph at the top of this page. There you can still see the bell tower that topped the Tower of São Paulo; and the Old Tower, although already incomplete, next to the Church of Santo António, between the Roman and medieval bridges. From the 18th century onwards, urban expansion brought major changes to the features inherited from the old medieval town. The wall and its towers were demolished to release the town and use the stone in objects of public utility. From then on, and since the famous photograph of 1858, streets were opened, avenues were transformed, squares were remodelled, some buildings were adapted and others constructed. The last urban landmark was the inauguration of the Ponte de Nossa Senhora da Guia, known as “Ponte Nova” [New Bridge], in 1980, which marked the landscape and removed the traffic from the Old Bridge.
Between 1858 and 1980 many photographs tell us about the urban transformation of the town, the changes in daily life and how historical moments were lived. There is also a short film from 1963, lasting around 20 minutes, directed by Reinaldo Varela, whose parents were from Ponte de Lima, and shown on RTP – Rádio e Televisão de Portugal [Portuguese public television], in a series entitled “Terras de Portugal” [Lands of Portugal], which portrays the life of our community in the mid-20th century. |
