Geocache Description:

09 March 2024, 11:00 - 12:00

yes Remember the fanny pack? no

Bum bag, waist pack, hip pack, belt bag, no matter what you called it, it was once as common as the common cold and, to some people, just as popular!laugh

The 80s fad of wearing a bag around your waist as an alternative to carrying a purse or manbag warped the good fashion sense of a great many people. Often made in bright neon colors and assorted prints, fanny packs proved to be handy accessories indeed to many a geocacher! I can remember three such bags that I have owned and used over the years. Most of them I acquired for free, either as swag from attending a convention or as a handout bearing some gaudy corporate logo. The best and longest-lasting one I had was leather (or a close approximation of cowhide) that could accommodate my Garmin, extra batteries, bug repellent, compact first aid kit, spare zipper baggies, spare log sheets, a water bottle, granola bars, whistle, Swiss Army knife, and a Dollar-store poncho! When the buckle broke, I fixed it. When the zipper broke, I held it shut with a bungee cord. It was a good and effective caching companion, and I ultimately gave it a Viking funeral when the "leather" began to crumble, most likely due to its repeated and prolonged exposure to sunlight's UV rays! crying

International Fanny Pack Day (IFPD) was created in 2007 by a man named Nick Yates. While out for a walk while wearing his fanny pack, Nick had an encounter with a homeless man who teased him about the bag. Nick smiled and chatted with the man, then he gave the man a sandwich he was carrying in the bag. This simple act of kindness inspired him to continue handing out food every time he wore his fanny pack. One day he was contacted by a local food bank. They had heard about his kindness from one of their regulars and together they collaborated to create IFPD! The movement has since grown to celebrate IFPD on the second Saturday in March in over 7 countries.

In recognition of Nick's inspiration (but mostly just for the fun of it) I'd like to invite cachers - and any friends or family who have a good sense of humour - to join us for International Fanny Pack Day. I will try to round up some swag so we can hand out prizes for things like Best Fanny Pack, Worst Fanny Pack, Oldest, and so on. And if anyone becomes inspired enough to attend this event dressed as Parksville's own version of a fanny-pack-wearing Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson (see background photo) I will award them an unactivated trackable.

Let's all "Rock" the fanny pack for International Fanny Pack Day!!
