Geocache Description:

One of a series of caches placed to honor prolific local cacher WERDAVE on the occasion of his 80th birthday.

The City of San José has a heritage tree program which recognizes trees which may be found on public or private property and which have special significance to the community due to their history, girth, height, species, or unique quality. These trees receive a special level of protection from removal or harmful pruning. The most recent list from 2014 shared on the city's website (certainly out of date) included 120 trees.

This cache takes you to one of these trees. It is a Coast Live Oak, Quercus Agrifolia. The 2014 Heritage Tree list shows it had a 55-inch diameter trunk with a circumference of 173 inches and estimates it was planted in 1963. The tree dominates the front yard of a house which was built 5 years before the tree was planted.

The cache is on the sidewalk so there is no need to go onto private property to find the cache or to view the tree. As with all neighborhood caches you need to be stealthy: expect pedestrians, passing cars, kids playing, nosy neighbors, etc.

Update December 2023:  This tree was on the heritage tree list passed by the San José City Council in 2014, resolution 77167, which was the basis of the web page referenced above. The City Council updated the heritage tree list in 2022, resolution 80762. This update continues to include this impressive tree whose identifier is HT-01-002.
